What is a DDoS Attack?

A Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack is an attempt to overwhelm a server, network, or service with a flood of internet traffic from multiple sources, making it unavailable to legitimate users. Unlike a regular DoS attack from a single source, DDoS attacks originate from thousands or millions of compromised devices — called a botnet — making them extremely difficult to block by simply banning an IP address.

Types of DDoS Attacks Power Down Defends Against

SYN Flood Attacks

A SYN flood exploits the TCP three-way handshake. The attacker sends a massive volume of SYN (synchronization) packets but never completes the handshake, exhausting the server's connection table and preventing legitimate connections from being established.

UDP Flood Attacks

UDP (User Datagram Protocol) is connectionless and requires no handshake. Attackers send massive volumes of UDP packets to random ports, forcing the server to check for applications on each port and respond with ICMP packets, exhausting bandwidth and CPU resources.

Amplification and Reflection Attacks

These attacks use UDP-based protocols like DNS, NTP, or SSDP to amplify traffic. A small spoofed request generates a large response directed at the victim. NTP amplification can produce amplification factors of up to 556x the original request size.

How Cloudflare Magic Transit Works

Cloudflare Magic Transit is an enterprise-grade network infrastructure security product that routes your traffic through Cloudflare's global Anycast network before it reaches your servers. Here is the flow:

  1. Your server IPs are announced via BGP through Cloudflare's Anycast network
  2. All traffic destined for your IPs enters Cloudflare's network first
  3. Cloudflare's scrubbing centers analyze traffic in real-time using machine learning and signature-based detection
  4. Clean traffic is forwarded to your server via a GRE tunnel or direct interconnect
  5. Attack traffic is dropped at the Cloudflare edge, never reaching your infrastructure

This architecture means your server never sees the raw attack traffic. Even during a 500 Gbps DDoS attack, your server continues operating normally because the attack is absorbed by Cloudflare's 300+ Tbps of global scrubbing capacity.

Why This Matters for Game Servers and VPS Hosting

Game servers — particularly Minecraft — are among the most frequently targeted services. Competing server operators and disgruntled players regularly launch DDoS attacks against servers, attempting to make them unplayable. Without dedicated DDoS protection, a single attack can take your server offline for hours or days.

For business VPS hosting, downtime has direct financial consequences. E-commerce stores, APIs, and SaaS platforms cannot afford to be unreachable. Enterprise-grade DDoS protection is not a luxury — it is a requirement for any production workload.

FAQ

Does DDoS protection slow down legitimate traffic?

With Cloudflare Magic Transit, clean traffic latency overhead is typically less than 1–3ms. For most applications, this is imperceptible. The performance cost of protection is far outweighed by the availability guarantee.

Is DDoS protection included in Power Down plans?

Yes. Cloudflare Magic Transit protection is included on our Ryzen VPS and dedicated server plans at no additional cost. All other plans include enterprise-grade Layer 3/4 DDoS mitigation as standard.
