What is Reverse DNS?

Forward DNS resolves a domain name to an IP address (A record). Reverse DNS does the opposite — it maps an IP address back to a domain name using PTR (pointer) records. When a mail server receives an email, one of the first checks it performs is whether the sending IP has a valid PTR record that matches the forward DNS of the mail server's hostname.

Why Reverse DNS Affects Email Deliverability

Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo, and virtually all enterprise email providers perform reverse DNS checks on incoming email. An IP without a PTR record, or with a PTR record pointing to a generic hostname like ip-123-45-67-89.ec2.internal, is a major spam signal. Your emails are far more likely to land in spam or be rejected entirely.

Checking Your IP's Blacklist Status

Multiple public blacklist databases track IPs associated with spam, malware, and abuse. Key databases to monitor include Spamhaus, Barracuda, SORBS, and MX Toolbox. Setting Up a Reverse DNS Zone

Beyond individual IP reputation, the /24 or /48 prefix block your IP belongs to has its own reputation. Prefixes previously used for large-scale spam operations or botnets may be treated with suspicion even after changing hands.
